Finding events

Activate Topeka lists events in Topeka for young professionals and entrepreneurs. You can see every event without an account.

The events page opens as cards. Use the Cards and List switch beside the event count to see a day-by-day list instead.

Calendar shows a month at a time. Week and Day show each event at its time, and the Sports switch adds Chiefs, Royals, Sporting KC, Jayhawks and K-State games so you can see what else is happening that day.

Map shows where each event is.

  • Search looks through event names, descriptions, places and organizations.
  • When narrows the list to this week, this weekend or the next 30 days.
  • Filters lets you pick tags, days of the week, organizations, and free or paid events. Clear takes them all off.

Tags

Tags such as Networking, Workshop, Music, Arts, Outdoor, Fitness, Volunteering, Family-friendly and Downtown show what kind of event it is. Organizers pick their own tags. For events we gather from organizers' public pages, we add Networking, Workshop, Outdoor, Fitness and Downtown only when the event's own description says so.

An event's page

Click an event's title to open its page.

  • Register takes you to the organizer's own sign-up page.
  • Add to Calendar puts the event in Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook.
  • Get Directions opens the place in Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze.
  • RSVP shows on events whose organizer takes RSVPs here. It's free, you sign in first, and the organizer sees your name and email address.
  • "Listed from public information" means we copied the event from the organizer's own public page. Check with the organizer for changes.
  • "Members only" means the event is for members of that organization. It's listed so you know it's happening.

Getting events into your calendar

  • One event: Add to Calendar on its card or page.
  • Several at once: tick the box in the corner of each card, then press Add to Calendar in the bar that appears. For Google Calendar, the file downloads and Google's import page opens so you can upload it.
  • Every event, as it's added: Subscribe, then pick your calendar app. Your calendar picks up new events on its own. If you've set filters first, you get only the events that match them.

Comparing events with your calendar

Compare with my calendar connects Google Calendar and marks each event as free or clashing with your schedule. Google shares only the times you're busy, not what's on your calendar. Stop comparing turns it off.

If you're signed in, it stays connected, and you can disconnect it on your account page. It works with Google Calendar only.

Hiding events

The X on a card hides that event, every event with the same name, or everything from that organization. Hidden events are only hidden for you. To bring them back, press the "hidden" button beside the event count and choose Show or Show everything.

Your account

You don't need an account to browse. Signing in lets you save events, RSVP, follow organizations, and keep your settings on every device. Sign in with Google, or with a link we email you. A sign-in link works once, within an hour.

Your account page, My Topeka, shows:

  • Saved events: tap the star on any event.
  • Events you've RSVP'd to.
  • A private calendar link of your saved and RSVP'd events, for Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook. Keep it to yourself: anyone with it can see those events.
  • Your saved view: pick filters on the events page, then press Save this view at the bottom of Filters. The events page opens that way whenever you're signed in.
  • Organizations you follow. Follow one from its page.
  • The weekly email, which you can turn on or off.

The weekly email

Sign up at the bottom of any page, or turn it on from your account page. If you're signed in, it follows your saved view and puts organizations you follow first. Every email has a link to unsubscribe.

For organizers

Organizers: post your events, at the bottom of every page, takes you to sign in or create an organizer account.

  • If your organization is already listed, choose Ask to manage it. You get access once it's approved. If it isn't listed, email hello@activatetopeka.com.
  • Post an event fills in the date, time, place, tags, who can come, and a photo. A new event shows on the site once it's approved. Changes to an event that's already listed show right away.
  • Repeats posts the same event every week, every 2 weeks, or every month on the same weekday, for up to a year.
  • You can cancel an event (its page stays up, marked cancelled), restore it, or delete it.
  • Your organization's page lets you change the description, logo, website and join link, and invite teammates with a link that works for 7 days.
  • Best times to hold an event shows how busy each day and time is over the next four weeks, and the quietest options.
  • Each event's visits page shows how many people opened it and where they came from, with share links for each place you post and a QR code for flyers.
  • Turn on RSVP for an event to see who's coming.
  • AI assistants: connect Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant so it can post and change your events. Events it posts wait for approval too.
